Blulog: Bringing Greater Visibility into Cold Chain

Maintaining the optimal temperature of the perishable food items throughout its cold chain journey is the biggest factor influencing the final delivery quality and the shelf life of products. However, studies reveal that maintaining the efficiency of the cold chain is often less than ideal. As the temperature fluctuates above or below the optimal product-specific temperature range, it endangers food safety and significantly increases food waste. In such a scenario, automated temperature monitoring solutions play a critical role in addressing cold chain challenges by providing realtime visibility into temperature conditions. In many cases, these solutions provide real-time alerts to avoid temperature breach, which preserves food quality and prevents wastage. This is where the Polish-French company—Blulog—wields its expertise through and through in the food safety landscape.

Blulog was created after 15 years of intense work on M2M technology, where the temperature was chosen as the main parameter to be measured. Today, the company specialises in delivering wireless, fully calibrated, and affordable real-time temperature monitoring solutions for both transport and storage of temperature-sensitive products. “Our solutions help the users to maintain the highest level of safety control by ensuring precise and reliable monitoring of perishable food products over the entire cold chain,” states Daria Roszczyk- Krowicka, sales and marketing director at Blulog. To ensure that the temperature of the food being transported never ventures outside of acceptable thresholds, the company has developed NFC and RFID-enabled data loggers. To that end, the solution is compatible with almost all Android and IPhone phones equipped with NFC feature. The company also provides an optional NFC USB reader to read data directly on a computer. The complete measurement data is then automatically uploaded to a secure cloud-based database that can be accessed via an online web portal for proof of delivery. The solution can track the temperature of products during the whole journey of the specific shipment. It can be even integrated into isothermal boxes to determine its inside and outside temperatures. In case of real-time monitoring system, the users can monitor the entire temperature profile, and, in case of temperature excursions, they receive real-time alerts via emails and SMS to take necessary corrective measures.

A factor that makes Blulog’s solutions a cut above the rest is its compatibility with any means of transport, including air and maritime. Moreover, the NFC solution is officially approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Unlike most of the reusable NFC loggers on the market that are large and expensive, Blulog’s loggers are compact as a credit card and priced 30 to 50 percent less than its competitors. Alongside, the company’s NFC loggers offer high-temperature precision between 0.1 and 0.5 degree Celsius on the whole range. Apart from the food industry, Blulog’s solutions also extend its benefits to the pharmaceutical industry. It is used to maintain the quality of stored vaccines and other medicines. “Our solutions were used during vaccine campaigns,” mentions Daria. The fact that the RF system developed by Blulog has already been introduced in more than 20 developing countries proves the company’s promise of delivering good conditions of storage of vaccines and other medicines. Blulog’s solutions were officially approved by WHO in the E006 category.

Making it all possible is the company’s experienced team of professionals and best-in-class solutions, with the help of which, Blulog has scripted success for a multitude of organisations; including DHL Global Forwarding and other logistic companies on different continents, international NGOs, healthcare and retail leaders such as Metro or Eurocash as well as companies from other sectors, such as Cirque du Soleil. As a result, Blulog devices are installed in more than 80 countries now, with around 10,000 trucks equipped and more than 10,000 assets monitored.

In one instance, Blulog partnered with DHL, a global leader in the logistics industry that wanted to monitor storage and transport conditions of perishable goods in an easy and effective way. On account of this, the DHL SmartSensor team implemented Blulog’s temperature monitoring system to ensure monitoring of transported and stored products. “Thanks to the speed and flexibility of the Blulog NFC solution, DHL can now decrease the time spent to check the temperature history of the shipments, save costs, and enable customers equipped with the dedicated app to get the information,” states Christopher Fuss, head of DHL SmartSensor. Moreover, DHL SmartSensor has purchased 5-digitamount units of Blulog NFC loggers to monitor temperature-controlled shipments and is further extending its business engagement with Blulog.

Such positive success stories are a testament to Blulog’s proficiency in the food safety monitoring realm. Currently, Blulog has around 30 distributors and integrators all over the world. Treading forward, the company aims to offer its solution to more countries as its technologies and products can easily adapt to the regulations of any region. “Coupled with that, we shall also continue introducing new solutions for not only temperature monitoring but also for other parameters as a response to the repetitive requests that we receive from our clients and partners,” concludes Daria.
