Shaping Leadership Through A Cross-Functional Food Safety Journey My professional journey, spanning food manufacturing operations, regulatory affairs, and food safety, has fundamentally shaped my leadership approach at ADM. Each stage of my career has reinforced the importance of cross-functional collaboration, attention to detail, and a proactive mindset, particularly about food safety and quality. At ADM, I strive to lead by example, promote a culture of continuous improvement, and empower teams to take ownership of food safety. Strong leadership in this space is about creating systems that work and building trust with both internal teams and external partners. Where Strategy Meets The Plant Floor As Global Director of Food Safety, balancing strategic leadership with operational complexity requires a top-down and bottom-up approach. I rely on a few core principles and frameworks to maintain this balance: Culture of Food Safety, as well as Continuous Improvement, are my watchwords. Risk-Based Thinking: We prioritize resources and actions based on risk. This approach aligns with regulatory frameworks like FSMA and GFSI and ensures we're addressing the most critical food safety threats proactively, not reactively. Empowerment Through Training and Culture: We invest heavily in training for technical skills and cultivating a food safety culture. Empowered teams are better equipped to handle complexities on the ground. Strategically, I work closely with cross-functional leaders, operations, procurement, quality, and R&D to embed food safety into every stage of the supply chain. It's not a standalone function; it’s a shared responsibility.

With a cost-effective monthly rental model, customers can access point-of-use machines that dispense filtered still water, sparkling options and chewable ice. Pricing remains consistent regardless of usage, eliminating hidden costs. The machines are tailored to fit any layout, scale, or workplace culture and connect directly to the building’s waterlines. The need for deliveries and refills disappears, making it easy for companies to effortlessly scale as their requirements evolve. Distinguishing Quench is its customer-first approach embedded in every aspect of the business. Whether through tailored hydration solutions delivered by a knowledgeable sales team, dependable onsite service from skilled technicians, or dedicated support from the customer care team, Quench remains laser-focused on serving every customer. Clients ranging from small businesses to over 75 percent of Fortune 500 companies benefit from the same standard of excellence. “Customer first philosophy is not just a slogan for us,” says Montreal-based VP, David Lacombe. “It's a culture that empowers every employee to act with the customer's best interest in mind and to always create a consistently outstanding experience across every touch point.” This commitment becomes crucial as many companies struggle with rising prices, frequent delivery delays, ongoing environmental concerns, and the heavy lifting and storage strain associated with bottled water. But for Quench’s high-end, multi-location clients, the primary challenge is delivering a consistent, high-quality hydration experience to employees across all locations. Quench solves these challenges through three key strengths: an unmatched variety of solutions, experienced leadership, and a dedicated team. It offers one of the most comprehensive product portfolios in the market, including bottle-free water coolers, sparkling and flavored water dispensers, and ice machines. All systems are powered by advanced filtration technology that guarantees fresh and clean water anywhere in Canada. With over 30 years of industry experience and a market presence across North America, Quench is trusted by a broad spectrum of organizations, from schools and hospitals to factories, hotels, retailers, and thousands of small businesses. This deep expertise means it understands its clients' operational pain points and delivers solutions designed to meet real-world demands.
A well-run hotel feels effortless, but behind the scenes, procurement can either keep operations smooth or create constant setbacks. Supplies must arrive on time, invoices need to match orders, and every purchase should align with business goals. Yet, manual processes, lack of visibility, overspending and human error turn procurement into a challenge. Ingredient shortages in kitchens, mismatched invoices in finance, and last-minute stockouts at event venues drive up costs and disrupt operations. Procurement in hospitality requires precision, and BirchStreet Systems delivers an end-to-end procure-topay (P2P) solution built exclusively for the industry. It simplifies purchasing, automates invoice processing, and enhances visibility to ensure every transaction is efficient and error-free. Procurement software often falls into two extremes— niche solutions that lack scalability or broad platforms that overlook industry-specific needs. BirchStreet bridges this gap with a complete P2P suite tailored to hotels, restaurants, casinos, clubs, and other event venues. Every feature is designed to address real operational challenges in hospitality rather than providing a one-size-fits-all approach. Hospitality professionals play a direct role in shaping the platform. “Our Customer Advisory Board, made up entirely of hospitality companies, guides our direction. Through three annual global customer conferences and a Strategic Supplier Council, we stay connected and ensure that our solutions align with what truly matters to our customers,” says Valerie Layman, Chief Product Officer at BirchStreet Systems. Precision, Compliance, and Smarter Procurement in Hospitality Effective cost control in the hospitality industry starts with enforcing spend compliance. Our Procurement solution guides employees toward purchasing from approved vendors at contracted prices, helping to avoid unnecessary expenditures before they occur. This ensures that every purchase is consistent with both brand standards and supplier agreements. By taking a structured approach, the system eliminates unauthorized spending and reinforces alignment with contracted terms and preferred vendor programs. Manual invoice processing leads to inefficiencies, especially for businesses managing high transaction volumes. BirchStreet’s platform automates this process through electronic invoice ingestion and AI-driven OCR. With the purchase order, receiving record and invoice withing the core BirchStreet platform, a 3-way match between all three records ensure businesses are only paying for what was ordered and received. Removing manual intervention reduces errors, mitigates fraud, and accelerates payments.
Bruce Roesner, CEO and Co-founder
“There are two ways to preserve food, refrigeration and oxygen removal. That science has been known for years. But while refrigeration is everywhere, oxygen removal has not rarely been applied practically,” says Bruce Roesner, CEO and co-founder of GreenLifeTech. That is the exact premise GreenLifeTech operates on. It makes a well-known preservation principle work in a practical, cost-effective way, without complicated chemicals or harmful gases. Unlike other recognized methods that use coatings in an attempt to block oxygen, GreenLifeTech removes it and releases it back into the air. This delays decay while being safe for the environment and usable in homes as well as commercial settings. Improving Shelf Life and Food Safety How does the system function within enclosed environments to extend shelf life effectively? GreenLifeTech’s system works inside enclosed spaces such as refrigerators and storage units. With less oxygen, respiration in organic materials slows and food takes more time to age. If the enclosure is opened, oxygen returns and the system resets. When sealed, it draws no power at all. “Our technology is simple, safe and easy to use,” says Julia Roesner, advisor and co-founder. Why is bacterial growth a concern when extending the storage duration of fresh food? Extending shelf life, however, introduced a secondary problem. The longer food sits, the more it becomes susceptible to bacterial growth. GreenLifeTech introduced controlled amounts of ozone, an activated form of oxygen that destroys more than 99.9 percent of bacteria and decays naturally into breathable oxygen. The result is a preservation system that improves both longevity and food safety. In a country where one in six people suffer from foodborne illness annually and over 120,000 are hospitalized, this carries real public health weight.
