How AI Helps in Poultry Management

By Food and Beverages | Monday, August 03, 2020

Artificial intelligence is poised to enhance productivity in poultry management, and the expected benefits promise to be transformative.

FREMONT, CA: Poultry industry is booming. Various technologies are emerging to help poultry farmers achieve maximum efficiency. As evolution in the poultry field is central to achieve peak, to compete with the emerging trends, the industry needs to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in that field.  The only question is how soon it happens. Here is how AI is being adopted in support of poultry management.

Top 10 Poultry and Meat Production and Processing Solution Companies - 2020AI-enabled drones are widely used in today’s poultry farm. Although there is concern that these drones could make flock nervous, it can be used for free-range or yard farms where poultry birds can roam freely. These drones work as a guard for these non-descript birds (large scale). Regular monitoring of aviculture with the help of drones is helpful for the security of the flock. Drones can also take pictures of the flock throughout the day at regular intervals and send it to the analyzing system to create a database for monitoring the flock.

Pictures or visuals sent from AI-assisted drone in free-range and three-dimensional models in control houses are fed to specially built symptoms detector analyzer to recognize illnesses at an early stage to prevent spread, which helps in improving production. It also helps farmers in saving the life of birds. By annotating the secretions on the beak of chicken, AI-enabled devices are trained to identify the difference between a healthy bird and an influenced bird. AI tools will also help to differentiate precisely the target shape and texture of the secretion.

One other practical applications of AI technology in the poultry industry can be the use of robots. There are several repetitive tasks that A-powered robots could assist with. Poultry houses require constant attention to cleaning and sanitizing, collecting eggs, and checking on birds. This process is time-consuming and monotonous, but it would not bother a robot. Additionally, robots are more precise, thorough, and honest about the work they do, compared to manual workers. A form of AI, machine vision, is used to grade eggs and determine defects such as cracking or internal blood spots. It can also be used in assessing infertility during incubation by scanning eggs and distinguishing fertile from infertile. An algorithm is then created, allowing the device to identify the percentage of fertility.
