The Role Of Technology In Grape Farming And Winemaking

Food and Beverages | Tuesday, March 22, 2022

It is critical to regularly analyze the long-term impact of viticultural management practices and identify opportunities to reduce vineyard operations' environmental imprint.

FREMONT, CA: Grape farming and winemaking have long been aided by technology. On the other hand, recent technological breakthroughs have demonstrated how automation may assist producers in ensuring the quality and purity of their wines. These advancements help growers worldwide make more informed and timely decisions while also reducing the labor required to operate vineyards and wineries.

Smart Vineyards: Smart management solutions optimize vineyard operations by collecting data and reports from devices installed across the fields. These can be used to monitor various variables ranging from weather to the amount of water in the soil. Further, smart management solutions can forecast grape disease by using precision sensors to evaluate the microclimates within the vineyard. This may result in a reduction in yield loss, pesticide consumption, and vineyard effort.

Intelligent Robots: Previously linked with low-cost goods, robots and machines now assist in the manufacture of premium wines. Robots are meant to eradicate weeds, perhaps precisely reducing the need for chemical weed killers. Because it is relatively light, it avoids compacting the soil. A self-driving electric car takes it a step further. It is capable of mowing, mulching, spraying, and side-trimming vineyards. It can also be combined with specific technology, allowing remote vehicle communication, video streaming from the front camera, and weather monitoring via an onboard weather station.

Production Matters: Technology can also help maintain the integrity of wine throughout the production process, from vinification to shipment. The racking system technology places each barrel on a set of rollers. This enables containers to be rinsed, filled, racked, cleaned, sampled, rotated and removed without coming into contact with adjacent barrels. Not only does this save time in the cellar and minimize waste, but it also prevents oxidation caused by excessive movement.

Additionally, a closure system that allows for variable oxygen transfer rates is one of the packaging and shipping advancements. With it, winemakers can regulate the speed of maturation inside the bottle and avoid cork taint. It also ensures consistency in terms of quality.

Once bottles depart the winery's premises, the live tracking system keeps an eye on transportation conditions such as temperature and humidity. Producers may resolve difficulties in real-time, ensuring that the integrity of the wine is maintained throughout the supply chain.
