AgTech Advnacements Bringing Sustainability to the Food Industry

Food and Beverages | Thursday, June 23, 2022

Technology advancements in agriculture greatly influence farmers' capacity to meet rising demand while safeguarding the environment.

Fremont, CA: Due to the imminent effects of climate change and the rising population, which is projected to surpass nine billion by 2050, the demand for sustainable food is increasing. According to research from Michigan State University, worldwide agricultural production must expand by 60-70 percent to fulfill rising demand. As soybeans are one of the most widely farmed crops in the United States, U.S. soybean farmers are at the frontline of the climate problem, working tirelessly to feed families around the world in a sustainable manner.

In addition to emphasizing soil health, technology is vital to all aspects of agriculture. Technology developments on farms enable farmers to grow more food in less area with more precision when applying fertilizer, water, and pesticides, thereby protecting the soil and waterways. Similar to how no two crops are identical, no two farmers are identical in their farming methods and products. Every farmer must adapt to diverse climates, soil compositions, and economic realities; therefore, technological developments are essential for effective and sustainable farming.

AgTech advancements that are bringing sustainability to the food industry:

Sustainable practices for continuous improvement:

Agricultural practices, such as no-till farming, cover crops, and crop rotation, enhance the quantity of carbon in the soil, restore its health, and ensure its long-term viability.

Autonomous farming

The goal of equipment such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and auto-steer technology is to boost efficiency and dependability while providing cost-efficient and effective equipment that can help satisfy the expanding population's needs.

Precision farming

Precision farming, which GPS, drones fuel, and satellites, employs technology to precisely plant seeds, water crops, and apply fertilizer, thereby improving crop yields while optimizing the impact of every resource and reducing waste and runoff.

Bioengineering

Farmers are employing the most advanced seed technology, which reduces the use of herbicides, reduces weed and insect pressure, increases yields and profits, and has a multitude of environmental benefits.
